Mass nesting of Olive Ridley turtles begins


Wildlife officials have detected isolated nesting by Olive Ridley turtles at Gahirmatha nesting ground in Odisha ahead of their mass nesting .Gahirmatha is known as the world’s largest known rookery of these marine turtles.During the first 2 months i.e January – February each year, Olive Ridley turtles turn up to this place in millions for laying eggs. along the Gahirmatha beach located in the kendrpara district of Odisha.Small group of turtles have crawled their way to the nesting beach at Nasi-2 Island and have begun laying eggs.The female turtles virtually invade the nesting beaches, usually at the dead of the night, for laying eggs, the phenomenon described as ‘arribada’.Last year these endangered marine species had skipped the mass nesting trip to Gahirmatha.The turtles had also skipped mass nesting at the beach in 1996, 1997, 2002 and 2008.These wonderful endangered species “Olive Ridley turtles” are counted among the wonders of Odisha.
